Question of the Month:

What’s a good supplement for joint health? I’m in my early 30s with a history of arthritis in my family and I want to start prevention.

Expert’s Response

Evidence-based strategies for osteoarthritis prevention do not currently include supplement use. Instead, a balanced diet that promotes achievement and maintenance of a healthy body weight is emphasized. People who are overweight have a higher risk of osteoarthritis, especially in weight-bearing joints, because excess weight can cause cartilage to break down more rapidly. Sufficient vitamin D intake has also been associated with reduced onset and progression of osteoarthritis. Good sources of vitamin D include fortified milk, sunlight or a standard multivitamin. Additionally, try regular exercise, good posture and avoid repetitive motions at work.
