A: Last holiday season I felt sick for days. Why? Because
I stuffed my face with so many baked goods, chocolate
treats and cream-cheese potatoes (yes, that’s what
I said), that I made myself physically ill. I felt like
a ball of yuck and was mortified at my lack of control
when it came to the food around me. I knew it wasn’t
necessary to eat everything, but put a tray of cranberry-cheesecake
squares in front of me and watch me cave - repeatedly.
We’ve all been there and we all know the results.
The holidays come around and so do the excuses for those “holiday
pounds.” With all the festivities, it’s
easy to lose track of what we’re nibbling on.
Deep down, you’ve got control - it’s in
there somewhere! Try these helpful tips to avoid giving
in, and keep your hot and healthy bod year round:
Fill up on the goods: So many of us “leave room” throughout
the day, knowing party goodies are awaiting us. We don’t
eat much beforehand in order to gorge when we get to
our holiday gathering. Not only will this leave you
starving, there’s a good chance you’ll binge
once you hit the treats table. Make sure to eat something
healthy, like some fruit or unsalted nuts before you
leave to curb your hunger and keep your options sensible.
Bring healthy alternatives: If you’re going
to a potluck, bring a fruit or veggie platter or broth-based
soup. Potluck doesn’t translate to junk feast.
And if food is provided and you don’t have the
option to bring your own, look for the lightest options.
You’ll most likely find something that isn’t
baked, fried of breaded.
There’s plenty! Did you know that the turkey,
stuffing, brown beans, pumpkin pie and cookies being
served aren’t the only ones left on Earth? Then
why do we gorge on these goodies like they’re
the last ones we’ll ever eat? Slow down, choose
your battles wisely, and savor your select few. You’ll
enjoy them more, be fulfilled without the stomachache,
and keep your belt at its normal notch.
Schmooze and lose: There’s more to holiday parties
than food! Catch up with old friends, introduce yourself
to new friends and enjoy the festive cheer. Conjure
up old memories to spark conversation. Reminiscing about
old times will prevent you from reminiscing about your
once cute figure in January.
