Kristal takes inspiration from men’s bodybuilding to feed her long-standing love of competition.

Sign: Taurus.

Hometown: Miami, Florida

Claim to Fame:
IFBB professional figure competitor, fitness model and personal trainer. Also overall winner of the 2006 San Francisco Steel Rose and second overall winner of the 2006 North American Figure Championship.

Her motivation:
“About three years ago, my husband took me to a bodybuilding competition to watch our buddy IFBB pro Bill Wilmore compete,” she says, noting that she’s learned a lot from Wilmore, her role model. “That was when my life changed. I saw the figure girls on stage and knew I wanted to be there. With the encouragement of my hubby, I started intense training to prepare for my first competition.”

On her bedside table:
A Dog Year is, ironically, by John Katz (Random House, 2003). “I am going to read every dog book out there. I love animals.”

On her time:
“I’m the type of person who tries to fit 25 hours of activity into a 24-hour day.”

On her spare time: Along with traveling, one of her favorite things to do is to play with her two chocolate Labs. “I can’t get enough of them.”

In her fridge: “Fish galore.” Along with that, she’s got a sweet potato, asparagus, spinach, sugar-free Jello and protein pancakes.

In the gym:
Her favorite exercise is lateral raises. “I love to train shoulders; there is nothing like a good shoulder pump.”

In her childhood:
“I grew up taking gymnastics and jazz dance, and was a cheerleader in high school and college.” But it was her love for competition that dragged her out to the track as a sprinter during her teens.

On cheats: “When a craving hits, I either have a sugar-free Jello, a sugar-free Popsicle, Crystal Light or sparkling water with lemon.”

On her iPod: Kristal loves old-school rock, so she’s got Aerosmith and Def Leppard. “I also have my cardio tunes, stuff like JT, Nelly Furtado and Fergie.”

Words of Wisdom:
“You can’t control anyone but yourself.” It is her dad’s and his dad’s motto.

Things she can’t live without

  1. iPod: “It’s the only thing that gets me through my cardio.”
  2. Hand cream: “My hands are so rough and dry, they feel like a monkey’s hands!”
  3. Ponytail: “I have long hair and live in Florida, so I have to have my hair off my face and back when the summer hits.”
  4. Cell: “I feel very out of touch if I can’t text or call someone whenever.”
  5. Eyedrops: “I have dry eyes so I have to have my drops on hand.”
